Children and the Archives
It's never too soon to introduce your children to archives. When children understand the concepts of archives, they understand history. Grab a copy of Treasures at the Museum and let your child know that he/she is making history everyday!

Living Legends Honored
Great fun this afternoon at the Association for the Study of African American Life and History ASALH Event. Held at the Renaissance Hotel on 999 9th St. NW Washington, DC., the program theme was Black Women in American Culture and History. I was gratified to see some twenty living legends honored this afternoon, including Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagan and Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole, two women I have had the opportunity to work with during my tenure at the Smithsonian Institution. I was also gratified to see the many folks who stopped by the table, including Dr. Thomas Battle and Dr. Howard Dodson, two men who have shepherded great African and African American history collections for decades.
There were over 1,000 people at the ASALH luncheon. The folks were out in all their finery, and Dr. Johnnetta Cole gave a wonderful keynote address. I look forward to joining the event next year...

Book Signing at ASALH and more
Friday's (2/17/2012) book signing outside the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History Mall Store was steady. Fifteen new young people were introduced to Treasures... A couple of them signed in for me. I'd like to give a shout out to Mia Johnston and Collin Pace. Thanks for dropping by!
Remember, Saturday, February 25th, I will be part of the featured author's event for the annual luncheon of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Washington, DC. The event will occur from 10 a.m. until 12:30 immediately proceeding the luncheon. If you have tickets to the luncheon, you will be able to find me at the Smithsonian's American History Museum table during the event. Hope to see you there!

Treasures and Valentines
Yesterday, February 10, there was an open house at the Archives Center, NMAH. One of the staff created a display for Valentine's Day. There were approximately 70 items on display from various 19th and 20th greeting card collections in the Center. Over 100 visitors came through. Treasures at the Museum also was on display outside the Center. I was able to introduce visitors to both the book and the Center. We made sales and had a crowd. What a fun afternoon! Upcoming Events!!!
I will have signings for the next three weeks.
Two will be held at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, DC TAM book signing events. They will occur on Fridays, February 10 and 17 from 3 until 5 PM. The first will be held in conjunction with the NMAH Archives Center's Open House on the First Floor, West Wing of the building. The Second will be held outside the Mall Store, 2nd floor, Center.

Next TAM Event

Russell Byers Charters School
On Thursday, Dec. 8, TAM author. Deborra Richardson. was one of the featured presenters at the Barnes &Noble Book Fair to benefit Russell Byers Charter School.
Wow what an event! First she had the opportunity to watch the 6th graders perform ballroom dancing -- the Waltz, the Tango and the Swing. The audience had as much fun watching as the students did dancing. And then she talked with the 4th grade students about Treasures at the Museum. Many of the students had read the story. They talked about Robbie and Brittany. Some mentioned their favorite story part. Others mentioned their favorite "treasure." Jordan talked about her rock collection, Josie spoke of her Harry Potter collection, and Nasir proudly noted his basket ball cards. Then Tyler told us about his favorite treasure, a French Fry! Needless to say, the students had a class chuckle after hearing that. Some of the students also mentioned trips that they had to museums, including the Smithsonian Institution. TAM Event Recap
On Friday, December 2, Deborra Richardson appeared at the Main Street Barnes and Noble store's Book Fair in Exton, PA. The event, a fundraiser sponsored by the Chester County chapter of Jack and Jill, was quite lively.
When asked about recent visits to museums, 8 yr. old Matt spoke about his experiences digging for dinosaur bones, and 4 yr. old Sydney spoke of her excitement about seeing all kinds of museums. When asked about their special treasures, the children spoke of pictures, dolls, basketball trophies, and football players...
Special "shout outs" go to Matthew and his friend, and Sydney and her brother who spent lots of time asking and answering questions about museums and archives with TAM's author.
If ever you are in the neighborhood of Phildelphia suburbs near Exton, I highly recommend the Main Street Barnes and Noble. The staff is super friendly and the regular events are very engaging. Happy reading!

This is a fun look at museums and archives and a great introduction to the Smithsonian for children. It successfully takes what could be big, impersonal concepts ('what is an archive?') and makes them easy for children to relate to. Given the specialized subject matter, it's a bit hard to picture kids picking up this on their own to read for fun (not that it's not a fun book!), but teachers interested in using it with classes will find some supplementary material at the end of the story to help them with their lesson plans. This would be a great addition to classroom or school libraries, particularly if visiting a museum or archive is part of your school field trip plans.

Reading and Book Signing 11/18/2011!
There will be a book signing and reading of Treasures at the Museum at the Patterson Elementary School in SW, Washington, DC. It is an after hours program. Plenty of parking is available on the street and it may be possible to park on the small lot at the school. Great Signing 11.11.2011!
The book signing on Friday was great fun! Thanks to Kimberly Springle for coming out....
